We believe all people are able to defend themselves in the bodies they are in today and we welcome people of all abilities to participate in classes. Instructors will work with participants to identify strategies that work for their bodies and/or assistive devices.
During this course you will be invited to practice in pairs, into a mat, and into the air in a large group. You choose how much or little to practice with a partner and it is an expectation that no one is touched--in any way-- without permission.
In the 2 Day Basic Course and shorter, the techniques are designed to be learned quickly by the average person and are designed to highlight the strengths of our individual bodies. You're invited to identify verbal and physical techniques that feel best for you.
This is a personal decision and we all have to be ready to take a Self Defense Course. Know that your instructor recognizes that many LGBTQ+ Folx have experienced harassment, marginalization, and/or violence. Instructors work to create a space that prioritizes your physical and emotional wellbeing.
WenDo recognizes all people can be at risk for violence and believes that everyone is deserving of high quality self defense. However, we also know the importance of spaces dedicated to the unique experiences of women/girls and LGBTQIA+ Folx. A central focus of WenDo and Defy! courses are exploring the oppressive systems individuals are subjected to in society including sexism, misogyny, homophobia, & transphobia. We are then able to explore the ways we may internalize this oppression and the impact it has on our ability to defend ourselves. WenDo classes are welcoming of those who live and identify as women/girls (trans and cis) 10+ and Defy! Courses welcome folx of all gender identities that are of part the LGBTQIA+ Community.
